The World Bone and Joint Awareness Week, declared by the UN and WHO, begins with the World Arthritis Day on 12 October. This week reminds us of not only bone and joint diseases, but also the importance of prevention and early diagnosis. There are many bone and joint diseases, including osteoporosis, osteoarthritis and arthritis.

Osteoporosis is a bone disease in which the bone mass gradually loses calcium and subsequently becomes brittle. The disease develops slowly, inconspicuously, its first symptom is a bone fracture caused by a slight strain. Risk factors include sedentary lifestyle, lack of movement, smoking, inadequate intake of calcium, magnesium, vitamin D, higher alcohol consumption, and higher age.

Osteoarthritis is a joint disease that causes loss of joint cartilage and loss of its elasticity. It manifests itself by redness, stiffness, pain, sensitivity to touch and ‘creaking’ when moving. Occasionally, bone protrusions, called osteophytes, may form at the edges of the joint surfaces and reduce the movement. Osteoarthritis often affects large joints, knees and hips.
